Company activities and impact

SHAWS CIC’s main purpose is to facilitate free physical activity sessions for the elderly, those with long term health conditions, Individuals from BAME communities and those from lower socio-economic households. The goal is to provide opportunities for people to reduce sedentary lifestyle and improve their health and wellbeing. The Company also organises free to attend Health events where professionals engage in informal discussions with participants on topics such as menopause, mental health, healthy eating and benefits of active lifestyle. The company’s activities not only help with physical health but will also have a positive effect on mental health, emotional health and reduce isolation thereby have positive impact on anxiety and depression.SHAWS endeavours to facilitate sessions which are appropriate and relevant to our audience. For example, the classes for the elderly are focused on falls prevention, balance and gentle stretches whereas classes/sessions for Muslim ladies are ‘ladies only’. The Company’s activities focus on removing barriers such as language, cost and transport. Activities are culturally appropriate and participants are actively involved. The physical activity classes have been beneficial to the local community and the feedback has been very positive. Individuals who have taken part in our sessions, have stated that their mobility, muscle strength and general fitness has improved significantly. Those who have taken part in the Health Events have stated that they have acquired new knowledge and skills in regards to their health and wellbeing.Since the company was established, the total number of attendees across all sessions has been about 150. Further new sessions are being discussed currently.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Company’s stakeholders are the attendees and funders. The health events and free exercises classes are in direct response to the local community demands. Feedback is verbally obtained and also via anonymous surveys. In response to participant’s feedback the ladies only badminton session was moved from 6:15pm to 7:15pm so that ladies can join us after work. Plans to start an evening Pilates class is underway which was decided by the older individuals who are not able to join badminton. Company’s policies are in line with the funders requirements. Funders, volunteers and stakeholders are invited to relevant events.

Directors' remuneration

Projects have been in line with the funders agreement which allows directors to be paid for the time they have put in each project.
