COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ending: 31 October 2023

Company activities and impact

22-23 has been a continued year of growth. We have grown our number of community groups and our corporate bookings have been gently increasing. All our groups are running in person except our Relax Breathe Harmonise programmes designed to be delivered online.Sing & Breathe We have been running weekly sessions (40 over a year) for participants with long term respiratory conditions, in Wakefield, Leeds and Halifax. Our sessions help participants to reduce breathlessness and isolation, increase wellbeing and increase positive self management of the symptoms experienced with their respiratory condition. We work closely with NHS respiratory physios, offering taster sessions as part of their pulmonary rehab programmes and taking referrals. These groups are commissioned by NHS trusts. This year we secured funding to expand our provision to and set up groups in Huddersfield and Dewsbury thanks to Kirklees Year of Music, Creative Minds and Kirklees Council. We have also secured funding to run a group in the other end of the Calder Valley in Todmorden which we aim to start in coming weeks.Singing for Happiness, OrbThis group is running in hybrid form with participants able to join in person or online through zoom. Sessions including warm up exercises, singing and an opportunity for participants to connect and chat, offering vital support. Participants report reduced stress & anxiety and many say they have used the songs and breathing exercises as a way to control anxiety and panic attacks in stressful situations. Participants also report increased confidence, increased happiness and wellbeing and reduced isolation.Relax Breathe HarmoniseOur service for people living with Long Covid continues to go from strength to strength. Our 10 week online programme was developed based on research, conversations with respiratory physios and people living with the condition and our own expertise. We have been successfully re-commissioned by NHS in Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and Calderdale. Once participants have completed the 10 weeks, they can join an online maintenance group or attend one of our face to face Sing & Breathe groups. We are working closely with NHS Long Covid teams to recruit participants and participants can also self refer. Impacts for participants include reduced breathlessness, reduced brain fog, reduced stress & anxiety, increased energy, increased positivity, increased ability to self manage symptoms. We have also been successful in securing additional funding to conduct some more in depth research into the impact of this service, along with grant funding to expand the service to cover Kirklees. Paul & Nick Harvey FundWe have successfully delivered our Diversity & Dementia project funding by Paul & Nick Harvey. We recruited and trained 3 trainees, supporting them to become confident in delivering singing sessions for people living with dementia. We conducted research into enablers, barriers and current good practice in the design and delivery of singing for dementia practice with a particular focus on services that enable participation of people from different ethnic backgrounds. We delivered singing sessions for participants of various organisations working with people living with dementia. We produced a report for Paul & Nick Harvey which was also shared with Music for Dementia. We also produced a Song Book full of songs from different cultures including music scores and links to teaching videos and Practitioners Guide which are available free on our website. We have also been successful in securing additional funding from the Utley Foundation to support the dissemination and testing of these resources as well as training.Sing From the HeartWe were successful in securing funding for a new singing group for people living with dementia. We are able to run taster sessions as part of the funding form Utley foundation which is helping us to build interest. This group has only just started and we hope to build it over the coming months.Singing for Parkinson’sWe have been recommissioned for a further year by Parkinson’s UK local Halifax group to continue to deliver their singing group. Numbers have continued to grow. The group participants have performed at a number of public events and conducted a ‘flash mob” in Marks & Spencer in HalifaxCorporate WorkshopsOur bookings included workshops and event energisers for organisations including Inn Churches, Sustrans, Madela and Wavemaker

Consultation with stakeholders

We continue to gather regular feedback from participants through evaluations forms, verbal feedback and testimonials. All feedback is considered in the planning of our existing services as well as the development of new ones. Evaluation forms our Relax Breathe Harmonise programmes and Sing and Breath sessions were developed in consultation with Respiratory physios and long covid teams in the NHS and also with Asthma Lung UK (formally British Lung Foundation)
