COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT
CHISWICK FLOWER MARKET COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY
Company Number: 12546445 (England and Wales)
Year Ending: 30 April 2023
The company operates a flower market in the Old Market Place, Chiswick High Road, London W4 2DR. The market is held on the first Sunday of each month (excluding January). The market was established in 2020 to help revive Chiswick High Road which had declined in recent years. It was the first new flower market in London for 150 years. The market sells a wide range of cut flowers, house plants, outdoor plants and accessories, with a focus on British grown/produced and on sustainability. It attracts visitors from all over London and from elsewhere. There are many traders who attend every market, several who are seasonal, and there is a steady stream of new applicants. Priority is given to local businesses and those with a strong sustainability ethos. The market is also very supportive of charities and not for profits who are invited to attend to promote their causes. The market has now been running for three years and continues to be a great success for residents and visitors alike. It has brought much needed footfall to the High Road, each market has attracted an average of 10,000 visitors. Many local businesses including shops, pubs, restaurants, and cafes benefit from increased revenues on market days. Local musicians are invited to provide entertainment at the markets in addition to school choirs for some markets. This gives novice performers an opportunity to gain experience with a captive audience. All profits made by the flower market are put back into the local community. During the third financial year surplus funds have been used to replant more neglected flower beds in the High Road, maintain those planted in the previous years, it has supported local environmental/educational causes and has worked on improvements to the market place in which the market operates.
The stakeholders comprise all local businesses and residents of Chiswick. Three surveys were undertaken in September 2022. These included market visitors, local businesses and residents for whom we hold contact details. These were to seek feedback and asked for comments/suggestions. The results were shared at a public meeting and via our website. The local council, the London Borough of Hounslow (“LBH”) is also a key stakeholder. The market organisers have worked closely with LBH in order to renew the licence to trade (every six months), to ensure safe and efficient operation of the market and to ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations. LBH continues to be very supportive of the market. The market is run solely by volunteers who are all local. Regular meetings are held to discuss the operations of the market, to ensure smooth running of the market and that the CIC continues to meet its objectives.Interested parties have been kept informed via newsletters, press releases and social media. We have encouraged feedback from all parties and where possible and practical we have implemented any feedback provided.
