DISS COMMUNITY TEAM CIC

Directors' report period ended 31 March 2023

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2023

Principal activities of the company

The principal activity of the Company is to act for the benefit of the inhabitants of Diss and the surrounding area, particularly through the encouragement of the arts and heritage.

Additional information

The Company’s aim is to make Diss a better place to live, work, visit or run a business. It has, as an organiser and facilitator, supported many of the events and initiatives that have taken place in the town over the last few years. This has been achieved in some cases by providing seed funding, to enable events to get established. We have also provided loans to established events where there is a reasonable prospect of them being repaid if they are a success. The third Diss Organ Festival was held in May 2023 and, again, was highly successful, attracting some 5,000 visitors to the town. The Team assisted with the Festival but, more importantly, obtained a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enable it to take place. While we will continue to support cultural events in their broadest sense in the town, a newer objective is to improve the ‘high street’, resuscitating the retail sector of the town centre, building on the arts and heritage sector which Diss has become known for. To this end in September 2021, we rented the old Tourist Information Centre, which had been empty for 5 years, from the South Norfolk Council under a Tenancy at Will. The intention was to provide a space where new businesses could test their business model on a short-term basis without the commitment of a lease and at generous rents. An entrepreneurial craftsperson took up the challenge and within a few months had built a sustainable business showing work by over 10 local craftspeople. At the end of the lease, we moved the business to 35e Mere Street, under generous terms from the landlord, which gave us more space to expand the arts and crafts and to allow two new companies to develop their businesses – second hand records and indoor plants. The experience gained by the latter has encouraged the owners to open a shop in Bury St Edmunds. Over the period, we showed that our shop model was financially sustainable. As we present this report, the Company has, in August, moved its operation to the old Beales store, the most prominent and important retail site in Dis, again on a pop-up basis. We have expanded the existing businesses and are in discussion with new businesses to take space. The building also allows generous spaces for community activities, the first of which will be a ‘Repair Shop’.
