Company activities and impact

The Forgotten News DeskFilament Projects CIC focus this year was the development and delivery of immersive theatre project, The Forgotten News Desk (FND).The FND included delivery of over 100 live immersive performances across three schools, differentiating for different key stages and for children with special educational needs and disabilities, and included special performances for parents and carers. Children engaged in artist-led workshops and inspired by their experiences, produced newspapers filled with their stories, which were then professionally formatted and printed for them.“The Forgotten News Desk captivated the imagination of ALL the children. The writing they have produced is amazing.” Lisa Hesmondhalgh, Principle, Peover Superior Primary School. Each child received their own copy of the newspaper to take home and share with family members. Copies were also distributed to local libraries and community spaces.“I am not a big writer, but it felt really good to write (the newspaper). And then to see it in different places around Chester and Blacon, it is pretty cool.” Year 4 pupil, Dee Point Primary School.Audio versions of the newspapers, voiced by the children, were also shared on the Filament website alongside digital versions, thus increasing the reach and accessibility of the project. In addition, four free live performances and creative workshops were delivered for families in Cheshire East Libraries. The company’s activities have benefitted the community by providing high quality, accessible creative activities, particularly focused on areas of socio-economic or rural deprivation. Through taking part in the Forgotten News Desk children’s literacy and oracy was enhanced. The project also raised aspirations, with children seeing their own work professionally presented and shared within their local communities. The activities helped bring schools together again following the COVID-19 pandemic. For one school the assembly where the final newspaper was presented was the first full school assembly in over a year.
