Company activities and impact

The objects of Hwb Ymaddasu Llambed CBC/Lampeter Resilience Hub CIC (LRH) are to carry out activities to regenerate and build resilience and the health of the natural environment in Lampeter and its local region, in particular (but without limitation) by promoting the necessary awareness, knowledge and skills to adapt where possible to unavoidable climate change and ecological breakdown, and to prevent and mitigate against further avoidable change. LRH was incorporated 18 October 2021 and in our initial year much of our activity focussed on developing our internal processes, as well as continuing the work we had begun with University of Wales Trinity St David (UWTSD) in relation to its Lampeter campus. During the year 2 of the original 5 directors left us, which limited our capacity. Our main work this year was with senior UWTSD Lampeter campus staff to :- support the development of new departments and courses to teach aspects of resilience- advise on ways to move to more resilient and environmentally friendly organisational processes- support changes in Lampeter campus estate management, encouraging them to plan any changes with a view to introducing multi-functional purposes (eg benefits to multiple user groups, increasing food production on campus, increasing biodiversity, creating natural learning spaces, planning for long-term benefits), and to incorporate more environmentally-friendly building works and development.- encourage increased co-operation with local businesses and partners in the communityTo these ends we have:- met regularly with the campus Provost and other senior staff to give suggestions and feedback on development of the new Canolfan Tir Glas. - created an interactive map of the campus for Estates and other senior staff to highlight how it can be developed as a live teaching tool for resilience, a community asset for the town and an ecosystem that fosters biodiversity- met regularly with and advised the Estates team on managing the bicentenary tree-planting project for biodiversity, food productivity and future learning resource developments- participated in formal launches of the Wales Centre for Resilience & Harmony and Canolfan Tir Glas, introducing our ideas to the local community and a wider invited audience. This included an interactive workshop with launch attendees introducing creative ways to think about resilience and hope- developed and piloted our core study module Resilient by Design in March-April 2022, as a foundation module for courses in the new Centres- completed a further online survey with participants in the 2020 public Resilience event Outcomes:- Canolfan Tir Glas has been developed by the Lampeter campus team together with local partners in the community from our initial proposal to include departments to teach sustainable building and wood science, rural enterprise and circular economies, and food and nutrition systems. It was formally launched on 19 March 2022, at which LRH provided a public workshop for local people using visioning techniques to identify what is important to them for a resilient future.-- a demonstration food-growing garden has been planned, with an initial planting of fruit trees as part of the campus bicentenary tree project; pocket orchard planting has also begun on the campus to create an orchard walk through the campus- plans to fell several mature trees on campus to address a building maintenance problem were scaled back, allowing most of them to remain, some being topped, thus continuing the natural habitat provided by these trees whilst addressing the building maintenance issues- the university has committed to localising its procurement for the Lampeter and Carmarthen campuses, supporting local businesses and the circular economy in addition to reducing its overall carbon footprint– incorporation of many of our ideas for biodiversity and resilience teaching resources into strategic campus planWe also joined the local Public Services Board Lampeter subgroup and began work on raising our profile with the local community in other respects and this will be more of a focus for us in the coming year.

Consultation with stakeholders

The main stakeholder with whom we have been engaged this year is UWTSD Lampeter: there has been no formal consultation with them, but our regular meetings with the provost and other key staff has provided ongoing informal consultation as to how we can work together for the benefit of the campus, students, local community and local environmentOur other stakeholders are the local community in Lampeter: our consultation with them took the form of the online survey, and discussion with the participants in the public online pilot of the our Resilient by Design course. One highlighted need was for readily accessible information on local resilience resources, and we are working on developing this in the next year.
