COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT
NATIONAL FOOD SERVICE LONDON CIC
Company Number: 13171023 (England and Wales)
Year Ending: 28 February 2022
National Food Service London (NFSL) is a collective of London-based (mainly Hackney-based) food lovers, cooks, growers, and community activists and organizers. We dream of a world where all communitiesmutually flourish by planting, growing, nurturing, harvesting, cooking, and sharing all the food we need to thrive. Our mission is to grow and nurture a world where communities face no barriers to creating their own sustainable, resilient, and diverse food systems. One that builds and celebrates the capacity for autonomy over food access utilization and production for everyone, regardless of immigration status, class, race, age, ability, sex, gender, wealth, beliefs, or lived experiences, in all of London’s communities. We have wide-ranging activities and impacts, outlined below. Emergency food provision (April 2020 - May 2021) Supported over 1,400 people with over 24,000 meals and 3,100 grocery packages and regular well-being calls. Handling a project budget of £75,000 over 13 months CiviCRM (August 2020 - present)Built an open-source Customer Relationship Management system for food provision, well-being, and community organizing using CiviCRM. Community Cooks Programme (August 2020 - present) Trained 12 Community Cooks and supported the establishment of 3 new community projects. All program participants had experienced barriers to taking action in their community. Published a 100+ page open-source Handbook, collating knowledge from 30 contributors.Partnerships (October 2021 - present) Established Hackney Food Justice Alliance subgroup for sustainable alternatives to food aid and successfully applied to Food Roots Incubator Programme. Community Well-being - Hotline Support (April 2020 - present) Established a listening service to offer ongoing well-being support and signposting to community members. The team has received over 1,400 requests for support since April 2020. Food Coops Supported residents to establish two Food Coops; Sankofa Food Coop (N4) and Mothers of Hackney Food Coop (E5). Participatory Action Research (September 2021 - December 2021) Undertook a Participatory Action Research food justice project with a team of 19 people (58% with lived experience of food insecurity).
Our stakeholders are varied, it is everyone that has the common goal of a sustainable, resilient, and local food system lives in North East London. Our involvement and work ethic in the community meansthat we have constant feedback and contact with our stakeholders.Participatory Action Research (September 2021 - December 2021)We asked 19 people what NFSL’s strategic direction as part of a just, sustainable food system in North-East London might look like, and are taking steps to achieve what the outcome of the reportsuggests. This community-led research approach produced in-depth knowledge about what our local community wants and needs.Community Cooks Programme (August 2020 - present)We conducted interviews with the participants at the beginning and end of the project to gain a greater insight into the impacts of this project on participants. These learnings have been integrated into athe new iteration of our Community Cooks program launching in October 2022.Community Well-being - Hotline Support (April 2020 - present)We ran a phoneline via which our volunteers regularly engaged with members and gather their feedback. This model developed strong social connections between members. This also resulted inservice users taking on leadership roles at our May 2022 AGM.Our partners are; members of the NFS network, Project Foodhall, Castle Garden & Climbing Centre, Carib Eats, Edible London, City Harvest, Elizabeth House Community Centre, Manor House DevelopmentTrust, TATI Canteen, and others. All of us worked together to achieve our common goal of a sustainable resilient local food system, and we have constant feedback on how to work better together.
