Company activities and impact

During this financial year, Makespace has continued to operate coworking and maker spacesin formerly empty buildings, providing accommodation for 45 charities, workers’cooperatives, CICs and community organisations each delivering a social and environmentalbenefit to their community. In 2020-21 Makespace’s buildings have been a home to organisations offering the following benefits to community>Reducing waste and building a culture of sharing and repairing through Share Oxford>Incubating a new social enterprise led by award winning Oxford Economist Kate Raworth, building a new regenerative economic system through Doughnut Economics Action Lab.>Making space for young people of all backgrounds to make music and build a supportive community through the Young Women's Music Project and Inspire Sounds> An inclusive community of makers and fixers through EOF Hackspace who used their 3D printers to create PPE as part of the pandemic response.>Cultivating collaboration between artists, writers, designers, horticulturalists and communities to support the development of innovative new work through the FIG project>Supporting organisations that value environmental sustainability, social responsibility, equality and human rights through designing, building and supporting websites for purpose-driven organisations through Agile Collective. All of our residents have benefited from rents at between 25% and 80% of the local market. This has enabled each organisation, many of whom had been priced out of Oxford, a securespace in which to operate and grow. Most organisations join the community to be part of thenetworking, sharing and co-ideation facilitated through Makespace. We have given space to even more co-ops, artists and non-profits in a new space on peppercorn lease which was renovated from a very poor condition. We have since completed renovations on a third adjacent property which was in a similar state of disrepair and in the following financial year offered spaces to a start-up hospitality run by the first Black woman to run a licenced restaurant in Oxford, as well as artists and creators who were greatly lacking for rehearsal, meeting and work space in the city centre.Makespace have also secured a £1.7m grant to run the Meanwhile in Oxfordshire programme, an 18 month Oxford City Council funded programme seeking to bring life back to high streets across Oxfordshire. We are working to renovate and run spaces in all 5 district councils in Oxfordshire, securing retail, office, and collaborative workspaces for organisations and businesses, prioritising those with a social and environmental mission, using an inclusive economy methodology. Our KPIs for this programme are to secure up to 30 leases covering 1935 sqm by 30th June 2022 and to support up to 112 organisations into space and to create or support 300 jobs by 31st December 2023.

Consultation with stakeholders

There are four key stakeholder groups for Makespace Oxford:1. Our residents - Social enterprise, community businesses, charities and makers who occupyour buildings. These stakeholders are involved in the ongoing development of the project andthe building via a fortnightly community meeting, regular consultations on proposed changesand improvements.2. Local community - Makespace has worked hard to engage local residents in the project, attending local residents’ meetings, engaging local councillors and developing plans forcommunity events. The building also provides services to the community via our tenants whooffer workshops, classes and in some cases we also offer free room and event hire.3. Landlords to the premises and property owners. Makespace is building a positiveReputation with landlords and in the universities, colleges and local councils through partnership development meetings, giving presentations and developing publicity materials.4.
