ALNPETE LTD
CHAIRPERSON'S STATEMENT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 5 APRIL 2022
The chairperson presents their statement for the period.
As a result of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, our activities have been significantly reduced again this year, as have our sales and our income. Although we continue to provide consultancy, web design/maintenance and pre-press work to our existing clients, including two specialist security assurance-testing laboratories with whom we are working alongside the National Cyber Security Centre, the amount of such work has again been extremely low.
Our speculative fiction imprint, Elsewhen Press, has seen an increase in the number and range of titles – we continue to publish work by writers from all around the world – although, in common with most other independent presses, sales have been reduced this year largely thanks to the stupidity of Brexit combined with the tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have been unable to maintain a presence at science fiction/fantasy conventions in the UK as those that happened at all were virtual which was not a worthwhile experience within which to attempt to sell books. Although we have maintained an online retail presence on our own website and through Amazon Marketplace in the UK, we are no longer able to export any titles overseas thanks to the destructive Brexit constraints which have resulted in unreliable customs and excise, exorbitantly priced shipping services and ludicrous bureaucracy. As a result, we have been moving our production to both Amazon KDP POD service and Ingramspart POD service. All of our new titles are produced using these two POD services which has increased our potential retail outlets globally by allowing overseas customers to buy our titles printed in their own domestic territory that is conducive to trade. We are slowly moving our backlist over to these POD services to. As usual, a number of our titles have been well-represented in various bestseller charts, and many receive very complimentary reviews in the media and online, as well as very positive customer feedback.
Yet again we end our financial year unclear what further negative impact Brexit and COVID-19 will have on the business itself, over and above the already significant personal impacts on our personnel, customers and suppliers; both continue to impact sales, increase costs, reduce income, and threaten our commercial existence.
