COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT
GAMECHANGERS - THE EAST LONDON PLAY AND LEARNING COLLECTIVE C.I.C.
Company Number: 13002011 (England and Wales)
Year Ending: 30 November 2021
We are a self directed learning community and based in an adventure playground in East London. The company exists to provide child care for home educated children aged 6 - 12 years, and it runs 2 days per week with 15 children and 2 adult facilitators. We are committed to equity, with an emphasis on play and consent. Gamechangers is a not-for-profit community interest company – we are organised by a committed group of parents who believe in democratic education. As a minority choice, home education is on the fringes of society, we are vulnerable to isolation and loneliness. The COVID19 pandemic has been catastrophic for socialisation opportunities as museums, parks, clubs etc closed. A key aspect of our vision is affordability and accessibility: Half of our cohort are low-income single parents, one third are from BAME communities, and we support children with SEN. We are an LGBTQIA+ inclusive and affirming space. Our community is designed to cultivate connection with restorative justice, nonviolent communication and sociocracy at our heart.
Gamechangers is organised by parents who believe in democratic education and our stakeholders are home educating families. We are based in Tower Hamlets, which at 57% has the highest levels of child poverty of any council in the UK. As active citizens we believe in fairness through equity rather than equality. Our community is involved at every level - from inception to daily running. In the year ending 30/11/21 we had: - 7 open call grassroots community engagement meetings - 40-50 people - 5 visioning meetings -15 people. - 3 co - directors, decision making core made up of community members- Social media, fundraising and core team steering groups - Community questionnaires investigating location, days of opening and age range- Monthly Parents meetings- Daily children’s meetings on open running days discussing Behaviour, community issues, plans for the future and requests for specific resources and activities can all be discussed.Almost everything, except premises and staff, can be changed at Gamechangersbecause of decisions taken at monthly community meetings. People take turns to chair themeetings, Roundspeak is used and there is a consent-based agreement process.
