COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT
PART W COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY
Company Number: 11968850 (England and Wales)
Year Ending: 30 April 2020
The company runs Part W collective, a community-focused group that organizes campaigns and educational initiatives with an emphasis on supporting women and girls being better enabled by design and in the built environment sectors. The group was established in September 2018 and formalised its operations when it incorporated the company on 29 April 2019. During the company's first financial period ending 30 April 2020, the activities of the company have benefited the community in the following ways:- Delivered public talks and lectures about the need for the design of cities, homes and infrastructure to take into account the needs of women and girls. Talks held online and in person. As invited speakers at events we have presented information and disseminated knowledge about these issues with other organizations, including being guest speakers, advocating for women and girls to be supported and accounted for in design projects, at events with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Architecture Foundation. - Held meetings with industry leaders in the field of architecture, design and development to draw attention to the need for female communities to be better taken into account in the way design projects are procured and delivered- Provided information and directed interested parties to educational resources to improve learning around the need for design to better take into account the needs of diverse women and girls - Distributed a monthly newsletter that has provided links and information to members of the public who have a keen interest in how cities and design projects can better support women and girls. Via this newsletter we have promoted job opportunities in the sphere of architecture and design with an emphasis on roles that support women into work- Held a fundraising dinner that convened experts in the field, to share ideas and knowledge about how communities of women and girls can be better represented and supported in the design and built environment sectors.
Part W collective is made up of women who all work in the built environment sectors, in architecture and design, infrastructure, housing, planning, construction and within design education. The Directors of the company have worked in the built environment industry for over 10 years and developed the business model based on experience of working in the sector. Our professional experience gives us an understanding of the difficulties women face working in the industry. We focus on three key stakeholder groups who we support:- Women who use the built environment and public spaces (public and private homes and housing, spaces of leisure, workplaces and green spaces and parks etc.)- Women working in the built environment sectors - Women and girls considering entering the sector We garner feedback from those who attend our public talks via short questionnaires about what more they would like to see Part W doing and the issues they feel need addressing. We have also held meetings with experts in the field who offer critical input on how we can better support communities of underrepresented groups of women and girls. This feedback has helped us to build up a profile of the needs of our target community and helps us to understand what we can do to support those needs more effectively. Our research has enabled us to identify that 24% of architects and 13% of all engineers in the UK are women. The majority of directorial level positions in planning, development and construction departments are primarily held by men and this has enabled us to identify the need to achieve greater gender parity across the sector. Accordingly our group is continuing to develop initiatives that provide women in the sector with information about in-work support and mentorship schemes so as to be better supported. During 2019-20 we also sought sponsorship for an educational outreach project, to be delivered in 2021, that will encourage more girls and young women to consider a role in the industry, and to signpost available resources on training, education and apprenticeships into the sector.
