HOPSCOTCH THEATRE COMPANY (REGISTERED NUMBER: SC151359)

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
for the Year Ended 31 July 2020

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 July 2020. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
As per the company's Memorandum of Association the objectives of the charity are to promote and encourage the arts and the study of the arts. Especially plays and drama using music, song and movement.

Significant activities
In 2019-20 Hopscotch carried out the following activities:

Created four new touring productions.
240 schools reached across all production.
Approximately 39,450 beneficiaries reached.
23 Performances at venues.
Engaged 34 freelance creatives and arts professionals.
2733 Online Audience Members Reached.

Commissioned Hannah Lavery to write a new play for young audiences (ages 7 - 12) called 'The Unseen Child' which explores children's rights and diversity in Contemporary Scotland. As of July 2020, the production is still in development due to restrictions from COVID-19 but received a work in progress reading at Imaginate's Digital Delegate Encounters Conference in May 2020.
Developed and toured 'SPRING-Y' a new play for young audiences written by Laurie Motherwell and directed by Ross Stenhouse in September 2019. 'SPRING-Y' supported children and young people's learning about resilience and wellbeing for ages 5 - 9.

Developed and toured three pantomime productions of Mother McGoose, written and directed by Ross Stenhouse, between November 2019 and January 2020 for school and family audiences.

Created a unique outreach resource to accompany the tour of 'SPRING-Y' supported by The WM Mann Foundation which included exercises, contextual information for teachers and original design by Laura Darling. This forms part of the continuing review Hopscotch Theatre Company are taking of its outreach activities.

In March 2020 the company closed its studio and postponed its immediate activities due to the country wide lockdown in response to COVID-19. It furloughed its core staff to protect jobs and accessed emergency funding from the Corra Foundation, Glasgow City Council and the job retention scheme.

The charity's future plans are focused on capacity and resilience building for the coming financial year as we negotiate COVID-19 and are unable to produce or tour at this time. The company plans to recommence development and touring in March 2021.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Investment policy and objectives
The charity does not hold any investments. Any surplus cash flow during the year is re-invested in pursuit of the charity's aims and objectives.

HOPSCOTCH THEATRE COMPANY (REGISTERED NUMBER: SC151359)

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
for the Year Ended 31 July 2020

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
The reserves of the charity are as described in the accounting policies. It is the policy of the charity to build up unrestricted funds to equate to approximately 6 months unrestricted management and administration expenditure to provide sufficient resources to meet ongoing projects and closure costs if required.

Based on current levels of expenditure 6-month unrestricted costs would equate to approximately £30,444. Reserves at 31st July 2020 were £68,399.

Financial Review and Results

The charity reported a surplus of £13,926 In the 2019/2020 financial year (2018/19 deficit: £6,973)

The charity once again had a successful pantomime tour though sales showed a downward trend on 2017/18 with a total income of £103,499 for 2018/19 versus £113,567 for 2017/18 owing to new strategies for production the expenditure of the tour was lower by £6,678. The charity plans on exploring new marketing strategies to increase sales.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic the company temporarily closed its studio in March 2020 and began working from home as per government guidelines and cancelled it's upcoming performances 'The Unseen Child' and our annual pantomime 'Puss In Boots'. In April 2020 all core staff were placed on furlough until August 2020. The board sought emergency funding for core expenditure from the Corra Foundation, Glasgow City Council and the HMRC Job Retention Scheme. Due to this we are holding a larger amount of reserves than we would normally expect but we anticipate that the charity will receive no income from activities until at least April 2021. It is anticipated that core staff will return to part-time work in August 2020.

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.

Organisational structure
The Board of Trustees hold regular meetings to review all aspects of the operation of the charity. The charity ensure that new trustees have skills that will complement the existing structure of the board and ensure that they are familiar with the practical work of the charity. They are also given training and induction when they join the board.

As set out in the Articles of Association the maximum number of Trustees is 20. One third of directors must retire from office at the Annual General Meeting but can be re-elected.
A member may nominate themselves or another for consideration for election as a trustee. The election process will take place at the Annual General Meeting.

The trustees may at any time appoint any member (providing they are willing to act) to be a trustee, either to fill a vacancy or as an additional trustee

Related parties
In so far as it is complimentary to the charity's objects, the charity is guided by both local and national policy. The representation of local organisations within this group has proved invaluable to the charity in establishing improved links within the community and identifying relevant policy developments and prospective funding.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF
HOPSCOTCH THEATRE COMPANY

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 July 2020 set out on pages five to twelve.

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
