ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
Jackdaws is dedicated to improving and extending participation in and enjoyment of, music and the arts through active, innovative projects, believing that this can positively change people's lives. During the year, Jackdaws offered a wide range of courses for adult singers and instrumentalists (for both students and amateur players) at its home base in Somerset. The courses were led by eminent musicians from the music colleges and other settings, and offered weekend courses for beginners and more experienced musicians, both amateur and professional. The courses continue to grow in popularity, with a third of those attending being new to Jackdaws. During the year there were fifty-one day and weekend courses, including solo instrumental courses and very popular ensemble courses. At the end of the year our programme was cut short by the Covid 19 pandemic and we were forced to cancel late March courses. |
The Youth and Community programme, which runs alongside the courses, is a vital part of Jackdaws mission to bring music to life by enabling creative expression. Through the programme, Jackdaws works with children and young people to make sure music is still accessible to children of all backgrounds - increasingly important at a time when music is under significant pressure in schools and funding is sparse. Jackdaws' has a very strong track record in creating and delivering large scale and hugely successful events with local schools as well as in depth on-going projects at our base. This year we worked with schools throughout Somerset and also with schools in Wiltshire, bringing active and innovative music making opportunities to 3,000 children and young people. Jackdaws is a founding and lead partner in the Somerset Music Education Hub, Sound Foundation Somerset funded by ACE and the DfE to provide music education across the whole of Somerset and an associate partner in Wiltshire Music Connect the hub for Wiltshire. Jackdaws is extremely grateful to the funding bodies, local authorities and grant making Trusts and Friends of Jackdaws whose support enabled the Jackdaws Youth & Community programme. |
The 2019/20 projects included: |
OperaPLUS Jan - May 2019 |
Opera Plus enables children in schools throughout Somerset to work with young singers and take part in an opera production. This year featured a revival of Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment, renamed The Team Mascot and rewritten to be about football, Five young professional singers together with a Director and Music Director worked with 17 schools over 6 performances and was great fun. |
The teachers who took part were surveyed afterwards and all said that the production had introduced them to a new musical genre and given them new skills to use in their teaching. All of them said they would take part again. |
"Being part of this project is one of the best things that I've ever been involved in. The administration and set up was easy, the professionalism of the singers throughout the workshops and the resources were excellent. However, the show itself was exceptional. The way that the singers involved and enthused the children was extraordinary and the fact that all the children (and adults) sat through and loved a top-quality opera was wonderful to watch. Thank you so much for involving us - we only hope that we can be involved again next year'. |
Many thanks, |
Mrs C Knighton, Headteacher, Baydon St Nicholas Primary School" |
The children were also asked for their reaction and some of their comments are given below: |
"Suddenly a rush of excitement exploded inside me and all I could think about was having fun!" |
"I felt all shy when we stepped onstage but when we started I felt so passionate. At the end the crowd erupted with applause!" |

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
"It was the best opportunity that I ever had." |
"You taught us incredible things like the highest female voice is called soprano and the lower female voice is called mezzo-soprano." |
"Thank you for letting us sing opera for the first time as an ensemble." |
"When I woke up on performance day I tried to save my voice but I couldn't stop talking about OperaPLUS." |
"The story was amazing and full of surprises, it just proves that no matter how hard it gets you can always succeed." |
"One of things that amazed me the most was the pianist because on one of the pieces she made the piano sound like a cello!" |
"The performance was a great hit and my Mum said that she absolutely loved it, she was amazed at how good your opera singing was. it was a great experience and it was a great way to let out all of our emotions and have lots of fun. I loved it so much. " |
Opera Plus was supported by Sound Foundation Somerset, the Arts Council, Wiltshire Music Connect, South Somerset Council, Sedgemoor Council Frome Town Council, Marlborough and Pewsey Area boards in Wiltshire, Marlborough Parish Council, D'Oyly Carte Trust.and the Weinstock Foundation. |
THE YEAR OF BASSOON March 2020 |
YEAR OF BASSOON featured the Genovia Quartet who visited 17 schools in Somerset to run a workshop with young players (any instrument) and perform for the school. It was a fascinating and fun exploration of a little known instrument - The finale concert was to have taken place on 24th March, but was cancelled due to the national lockdown at that time. But all visits etc had taken place and the quartet made a video of one of the finale pieces for the schools to play along with so they can have their own finale concerts at some point. |
The Year of Bassoon was supported by Sound Foundation Somerset. |
SONG STORY June/July 2019 |
A project designed specifically for SEN schools, the Song Story team worked with Elmwood SEN school and Robert Blake Science College, Critchill SEN, Selworthy SEN, Avalon SEN schools and, The Mendip SEN School. Composer William Carslake, Saffron van Zwanenberg, violinist Flora Curzon and actress Kate Adams, worked with them to create and perform a show based on Handel's music-"Hallelujah Handel", told the story of an orphan rescued by Handel from the streets of London. The children sang, played instruments and acted in mini performances to each of their schools and did a wonderful complete finale performance with all of them in front of a very large audience of their peers and families, as one child said- "He was the Rock Star of his era!". It was, as ever, a source of great joy and pride to everyone who took part, and we were very glad to be able to put 53 of the children who took part in for their Discover Arts Award certification which they have been duly awarded. |
Song Story was funded by Sound Foundation Somerset |

THE SUMMER PRODUCTION July 2019 |
Twenty young participants took part in the production week which was held in our new studio for the first time. The participants were offered a choice of three stories, composers and artists/designers from which to select to form the starting point for their production. They chose Much Ado About Nothing with music inspired by Ligeti and design inspired by Matisse. They then spent week developing the production and gave a performance off the finished article to an audience of parents at Jackdaws . |
The Summer Production was supported by Sound Foundation Somerset Funded and the Angus Allnatt Trust. |
JACK'S MUSIC CLUB Weekly during Term time |
Jacks Music Club has become a well-established part of Friday afternoons at Jackdaws with a committed group of young people taking part each week. During the year they have had the opportunity to work with a number of Jackdaws' visiting tutors, experience a wide variety of musical genres and play in a range of ensembles. They also performed at Jackdaws Christmas concert on 20 December. |
Jacks is supported by Sound Foundation Somerset and Jackdaws Educational Trust |

THE LEHANE WISHART STUDIO |
Jackdaws new teaching studio has been operating for just over a year and response from users has been overwhelmingly positive, despite a few early issues with regard to the bright acoustic. It has proved a very beneficial addition to the weekend courses, providing participants with a comfortable and inspiring place to work and it is beginning to generate new uses for people wishing to rehearse there. It is a very welcome addition to Jackdaws and we are extremely grateful to all the donors who helped make it happen. |
FUNDING |
Jackdaws is very grateful to all the individuals and organisations that have helped support its activities over the year, including the Friends of Jackdaws, The Arts Council, Sound Foundation Somerset, Wiltshire Music Connect, Angus Allnatt Trust, Frome Town Council, Sedgemoor Council, South Somerset District Council, Marlborough and Pewsey Area Boards, Marlborough Parish Council, the Rosemary Bugden Charitable Trust, the D'Oyly Carte Trust, AiMS, Cooper Hall Emerging Artists and Geoffrey and Margaret Batten and a number of individual supporters.
