for the Year Ended 31 March 2019 |
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their |
report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2019. The trustees have |
adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice |
applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard |
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015). |
CHAIR'S INTRODUCTION |
I am delighted to present this report for an excellent year 2018-19. We are especially proud of the event Life |
with Dementia, which took place at Nottingham Racecourse on 14th November 2018. The event was |
genuinely user-led, well attended and enthusiastically received. It reflected the excellent work done by our |
project manager, project development worker and core advisory group. We have managed our finances |
prudently and we gratefully acknowledge the generous support of Dementia Research UK. We have improved |
our standards of governance by updating our internal policies. We have no safeguarding or data protection |
issues to report in the past year. |

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Objectives and aims |
The company's objects and principal activities are: |
To advance education of persons who work with people who have dementia and similar conditions and those |
who care for them. |
For the benefit of the public by promoting the development of high quality services for such people and their |
carers. |
Trustees decided to launch Trent Dementia new website on 11th September 2018. The new website's |
address is: www.trentdementia.org.uk with a new logo. |
The main focus of the work of the charity this year are the project of empowerment for people with dementia |
and their carers, called Life with Dementia, and Nottingham DEEP Support Hub that helps initiate and support |
peer support DEEP groups in Nottingham. We were awarded £7,438.00 by Innovations in Dementia following |
the DEEP Working Together Grant to develop a Hub for DEEP in Nottingham. Trustees decided to continue |
working with the Project Manager from last year to manage Nottingham DEEP Support Hub and Life with |
Dementia projects. The project manager is working on self-employed basis. |
The project manager so far has published one article about the Life with Dementia project in Dementia Care |
Journal. She provides monthly updates about the project to the Trustees. In July 2019 the Project Manager |
reported that she submitted a bid to collaborate across the DEEP network to develop and pilot a virtual peer |
support group. The charity was awarded the full cost of £7,500 to facilitate eight virtual meetings, collaborate |
on developing resources including guidelines on boundaries, ground rules and formats. The charity was paid |
£5,000 initially. The remaining £2,500 is to support a gathering of participants to share learning and finalise |
guidelines. |
For Nottingham DEEP Support Hub, the Trustees decided at 13th February 2019 meeting to recruit two |
freelance project workers. Their pay is to come from the Innovations in Dementia DEEP grant. The job advert |
was put on Trent Dementia's new website and Twitter page. The recruitment had two stages: written |
application and interview. The interview panel consisted of the project manager, two members of the Core |
Advisory group, and one Trustee. The sessional workers' induction session was on July 3rd, 2019. Right now |
they are waiting for their Enhanced DBS check and references to arrive. The freelance project workers will |
provide support to individuals and groups who wish to establish or participate in DEEP groups across |
Nottingham. This may include: |
- Logistical Support, for example, arranging travel tickets or booking venues |
- Development Support, for example, promoting new groups, helping to prepare marketing information, |
offering support to access the internet and social media or offer workshops on specific topics |
- Pastoral Support, for example, supporting people to facilitate groups or help to resolve any difficulties within |
the group - issues with access, relationships or enabling people to participate in activities. |
Trustees also intended to support four bursaries for the Leading Dance for Older People 2- day training |
course. The course was scheduled for May 18th and June 8th, but was delayed. |
We still have our advisor who brings new insights and experiences from a carers perspective. We are still |
receiving our grant funding from Dementia Research UK in the amount of £2000 per month. |
Our part-time administrative officer still helps with day to day administration of the charity. She will help with |
responding to enquiries, contributing to the development of a new website, project and events; supporting |
trustees maintaining and updating essential charity records, including policies; working with trustees to |
complete annual returns to the Charity Commission and Companies House; and maintaining up-to-date and |
accurate information. She helps Life with Dementia project 11 hours per week on a freelance basis. |
The Charity has got now Employer's Liability and Public Liability Insurance with CASE Charity Insurance for |
their project which was updated in June 2019. Trustees also received free legal assistance with reviewing |
policies at probono Law Works Not-For-Profit a programme through their Honorary Counsel pilot project. The |
law firm that sent the review was ReedSmith. Henry Birkbeck sent a review on 4th July 2019 to be decided |
upon by Trustees in their AGM on 10th July 2019. |
The responsible person for Safeguarding in the charity is TD. The Data protection officer is MC. The |
Safeguarding policy needs to be updated this year 2019. |

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Training |
We now have our monthly core advisory group meetings which consists of four people living with dementia in |
Nottinghamshire. Three members from the 2018 Core Advisory Group dropped out. Three new members |
were added. The new members were friends with the two Core Advisory group members in Nottingham. |
These meetings started on 22nd January 2019. They had their fifth meeting on 13th June 2019. They are |
planning to have a free event on October 10th which is designed and led by people living with dementia. They |
decided to have a day out on 14th August, 2019. They will finalise the themes in their September meeting. |
The meetings provided us valuable intelligence, enhancing our training portfolio and enabled us to possibly |
hold the first DEEP social group in Nottingham during the event and assist people with dementia and their |
carers to organise events and ask the service providers in the field to provide services according to their |
rights and needs. |
AT Dementia |
The Charity has continued supporting the ATdementia website and updating its resources for assistance |
technology. The Disabled Living Foundation has agreed to manage ATdementia from next year. Trustees |
decided on 13th February to ask DLF to finalise the adoption of AT Guide and ATdementia in six months. |
Otherwise it would be winded down. |
Plans for next year |
The National Lottery Awards for All was paid into the charity's account on 7th December 2018 in the amount |
of £9,848.00 for Life with Dementia 2018 project. This project was in collaboration with Innovations in |
Dementia and DEEP in East Midlands region. The project manager has applied to several funding resources |
to secure funding for the second year of Life with Dementia project in 2019. They consultations of the core |
advisory group will lead to an event on October 10th organised by people with dementia. For this project, |
trustees are using the service of the project manager on a freelance basis. The core advisory group |
consultation process continued in 2019 with three new people. The consultation process also helps us to |
develop an up-to-date vision for Trent Dementia that sets it apart from other services in the region. In |
particular this is focusing on new and innovative ways of providing the services that people with dementia tell |
us that they want and need. |
Project Manager also applied for Working Together Grant to develop a virtual peer support group for |
facilitators of DEEP groups. The project manager reported in July 2019 that the pilot group started on July |
4th, 2019. There is a lot of interest and potential for further development. The meetings will eventually result in |
developing resources including guidelines on boundaries, ground rules and formats. The application was |
successful. The fund is yet to be paid into Trent Dementia account. We intend working closely with |
Innovations in Dementia in developing our consultation process which offers new opportunities to expand our |
activities e.g. consultancy services to businesses. |
Funds held as custodian trustees on behalf of others |
Trent Dementia charity has got no assets. It operates on individual donations and grant funding from |
Dementia Research UK received monthly. The money is now in Lloyds bank business account. The money |
was manually transferred by SB from NatWest account to Lloyds new account on 13th and 14th December, |
2017. The account has got four signatories: TD, SB, JL, and PF. All cheques need one signatory to sign for |
authorisation. We are in the process of moved our bank from NatWest to Lloyds, because of security and |
more efficiency. NatWest account is still open in case any money is paid into the old account. Trustees |
decided to close the NatWest account if the balance is zero for the duration of a year. |
The charity also had £6,434.39 in restricted fund from Abbeyfield Society which made two payments of £5K in |
2015 and 2016 (total £10K) to Trent Dementia for payment to a researcher for Evaluation of Imagine Arts: for |
payment to undertake Social Return on Investment component of research. After contacting Abbeyfield, they |
said on 6th June that the all unspent funds need to be refunded to Abbeyfield. |
