THE U.K. WOLF CONSERVATION TRUST (Registered number: 03686061) |
The Trust's Activities |
for the Year Ended 31 December 2018 |
The most important news during 2018 was that, after a great deal of thought and with much sadness, we |
decided not to renew our zoo licence in September 2018, so we reverted to holding a dangerous Wild |
Animals Act licence. Consequently the Trust closed its doors to Wednesday visitors and all public events with |
the wolves at the end of August 2018. |
In 2017 we had had almost 12,000 visitors and we really struggled to cope with this number with our limited |
facilities on site, two toilets and especially during the wet winter and spring months when we were unable to |
use the field for car parking. |
Several of the wolves are reaching the twilight years of their lives and our youngest wolves, the Beenham |
pack, are now rising 8 years old and are no longer enjoying members walks, so on welfare grounds it was |
decided to put them all into retirement. The wolves will remain here in their enclosures at Beenham with |
sufficient funds saved over the years to care for them. Volunteers who know them well will continue to care, |
walk and socialise with them. I, together with my children, Lara and Johnny as fellow directors will ultimately |
share the responsibility for their welfare. |
As I mentioned earlier I took the decision to close the Trust to the Public with a heavy heart. Since 1995 we |
have had around 200,000 visitors to Beenham, and in the early days, by taking the wolves to a number of |
large country shows, we probably introduced the wolves to at least another 200,000. We are very proud of |
what the Trust has achieved, from breeding the first European Wolves in the UK for over 350 years, importing |
the first Arctic wolves to the UK, educating people worldwide, to supporting and donating over £355,000 to |
vital conservation projects across the globe. |
The perception of the wolf has changed immeasurably since Roger obtained his first wolf cub "My Lady" in |
the early 1970s. After the Berne Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats |
came into force in 1982, the wolf is now a protected species in Europe and their numbers are steadily |
increasing. The wolf is defying our prejudice and living increasingly successfully alongside us. Wolves only |
returned to Germany at the start of the century but now there are 60 packs totalling between 150 and 160 |
adult wolves. Last winter Denmark welcomed its first pack for more than two centuries. Wolves have been |
sighted in the Netherlands, Northern France and even Luxembourg. A wolf recently returned to Belgium, the |
last continental European country without wild wolves. |
During 2018 we were able to donate £25,000 to conservation projects around the world. |
The donations were as follows |
£5,000 - Israel, Wolf Population Study, Matnas Arava and the Dead Sea |
£3,000 - University of California Davis, Research on the wolf population of Pakistan |
£5,000 - The Ethiopian Wolf Project, Claudio Sillerio and Born Free Foundation, Oxford University |
£2,000 - USA, The Red Wolf Coalition, Cornelia Hutt |
£5,000 - Croatia, Zagreb Veterinary Institute and Josip Kusak, Indigenous Wolf Research Programme |
£3,000 - Russia and Finland, The Christy Les Biological Station, Vladimir Bologov |
£2,000 - Bulgaria, Balkani Wildlife Society |
Also, following Torak's escape in February, we decided to give the Thames Valley Police Cadets a donation |
of £5,000 in recognition of the wonderful support from the police in helping return Torak safely to the Wolf |
Conservation Trust. |
Total donations for the year were therefore £30,000 |

None of these could be hosted or run without our wolf keeper Mike Collins assisted by Pat Melton, Wendy |
Brooker and our team of expert and knowledgeable volunteers who continue to give so much of their spare |
time to help talk to visitors and obviously walk the wolves. |
The office was run by Lynn Kent assisted by Fran Macilroy, Lesley Emmett and Stephen Walker. Wolf Print |
has again produced some inspiring wolf conservation reports from around the world, as well as news on our |
own wolves who all continue to thrive. My thanks to Juliana Bohanna and Fran Macilroy for all their expertise |
and others who ably write the interesting articles. |

The Trust's Activities |
for the Year Ended 31 December 2018 |
I am pleased to say that following closure the permanent staff have all successfully secured employment |
elsewhere; Mike Collins has become an Elephant Keeper at Whipsnade Zoo whilst Fran and Lynn have |
secured employment locally. |
The UKWCT welcomed around 60 work experience students throughout the year who observe the wolves' |
behaviour, engage with visitors on Wednesdays and event days and help manage the site. |
Thus in 2018 the UKWCT fulfilled its four main aims: |
" To increase public awareness and knowledge of wild wolves and their place in the ecosystem. |
" To provide opportunities for ethological and other research that may improve the lives of wolves both in |
captivity and the wild. |
" To provide wolf-related education programmes for young people and adults. |
" To raise money to help fund wolf-related conservation projects around the world. |
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, volunteers, members and visitors who have |
supported the Trust over the years and made it such as success. |
We will continue to post updates on the wolves on our website and the two webcams will allow people to see |
what the wolves in the relevant enclosures are up to. |
The Trust is still receiving donations and legacies which are going towards the upkeep of our 10 wolves and |
where specified, still donated to overseas projects. |
